Women’s Fund of Northern Santa Barbara County – a Circle of Giving Women

What Is a Giving Circle?

A giving circle is a form of group philanthropy where individuals combine their money and/or time so that they can have a bigger impact on the causes most important to them, than they would by donating individually. There are many hundreds of giving circles functioning in the United States today, and they are increasing rapidly. Most have formed since 2000, they are located in every state, they are nonsectarian and focus on local community activities, and frequently they are composed entirely of women.

Women do so much to make successful communities possible. They embody a delicate balance of strength and compassion and as a result, tend to exhibit a fierce determination to fight for what they believe in. They are willing to invest their dollars, their time, and their best ideas in solutions to issues that their communities care about the most.

The Women’s Fund honors the vital role women play in our community, and is dedicated to significantly increasing opportunities for women to participate fully as successful philanthropists.

The Power of the Purse

The Women’s Fund of Northern Santa Barbara County, with its slogan “Power of the Purse” and familiar W logo, asks foundations, service clubs and businesses, as well as its members, to support its activities. In particular, the Roy and Ida Eagle Foundation and the Orfalea Foundation have generously supported the group.

Since 2009, the Santa Barbara Foundation has been the Women’s Fund’s fiscal home.

Women’s Fund Grants

Each year the Research Committee accepts suggestions from members, and the community at large, for consideration of potential projects to fund. The Committee considers only projects with clear and capable leadership and a viable action plan. The focus of the projects must benefit women, children and families. Members decide all granting decisions by a simple majority vote.
